The album will be a revelation for listeners who caught onto Lang with "Ingenue" and its hit single, "Constant Craving." While Lang never fit the bill as a Nashville regular, her country work is lively and rocking. Even if it's done with a nudge and wink, it shows her love and talent for the music.

"I wanted to re-create what a live show would feel like back in those days," Lang says. "I wanted to focus on a punkabilly kind of vibe."

"The songs are definitely in a singer-songwriter style," she said. "Very intimate and very personal."

"It seems like an absolute blend of everything," Lang says. "There are pieces of my whole career in there."

this album will include some songs co-written with david piltch "We recorded several records together, toured, and teamed to write songs. kd's new record will have five songs which she and I wrote and recorded in her Art Kitchen (home) in L.A. and in my garage in Santa Barbara."

K.D. Lang vs. Carmen Rizzo...

Currently I am working on a song with K. D. Lang for her new album 'Watershed" (Nonesuch). A really great honor and a wonderful opportunity Her voice is incredible!! "well i can't say much, yet.... untill they give the thumbs up. i'm still waiting to hear, they approached me to work on a song which is really good, and i'm super happy how it turned out. don't wnt to get in toublem you understand, as soon as i know what's up which should be very soon, ill keep you posted. thanks!"

k.d. "Watershed is like a culmination of everything I've done -- there's a little bit of jazz, a little country, a little of the Ingénue sound, a little Brazilian touch. It really feels like the way I hear music, this mash-up of genres, and I think it reflects all the styles that have preceded this in my catalogue. I didn't feel the need to be genre-specific because this experience felt so wide open. I didn't have a band in the studio where I had to come up with a feel for a song because the clock was ticking and dollars were flying out the window."

In content, says lang, the songs on Watershed "are similar because they all are a reassessment of my relationship to the world and to myself, and how my actions and thoughts and my offerings affect my life and the lives of others. That's where the idea of a watershed comes in, I guess, with a shift in perspective." And the way she performs her lyrics has evolved along with her words. The bravura moments here are often the quieter, more confessional ones. Cosseted by longtime band-mate Teddy Borowiecki's inspired string arrangements, lang found no need to belt. "I think that is age and wisdom," she decides. "It's like a painter discovering earth tones again in a whole new way or a chef coming back down to the Alice Waters level of cooking, where sea salt is the absolutely perfect spice. It's about communicating, and sometimes communicating is about whispering or about simply stating something in a gentle, quiet manner. I love that I've uncovered that part of me. I love to sing that way, it feels really good on the throat, it feels very natural." As for her legendary bringing-down-the-house vocal prowess, lang admits, laughing, "I was ready to conquer the world and my voice was just an extension of my exuberance."

In her 25 years of record-making, lang has worked with a wide range of producers -country (Owen Bradley), pop (David Kahne), even rockabilly (Dave Edmunds) -- and she has co-produced such discs as the 1992 Ingenue, which included the Grammy Award-winning "Constant Craving." With Watershed, lang explains, "It started to unfold in a natural progression. I began to demo the songs in such a way that all the performances could be used on the record if I wanted them to. I would just step back from a song, revisit it later, and if I liked it, I would keep the track. It was a matter of chronicling, of documenting the songwriting process. A lot of what you hear on Watershed is first approaches, the creative moment of songwriting rather than just the performance of a song. For example, the vocal on the 'Shadow and the Frame,' that's the first time I sang it. I tried to capture the most real, the most honest performance to me. In a lot of cases, it was the very first one. I was always looking for a producer, but in the back of my mind I was thinking, I can produce this. I guess I kind of grew into the fact that I could do it, that I had the confidence to it. I kept working on the songs and then I brought in Lynne Earls, a friend who's an engineer and a programmer, and we started cleaning them up. As I kept doing that, I realized I am producing this record -- so just finish it. I went into the process a little more intensely in the last year and a half, more intensely into editing and overdubbing, staying focused and diligent -- and then I was done. And I had produced the record."

The anything's-possible approach lang took to making Watershed yielded its share of surprises. "Jealous Dog," for example, is entirely a first take. Says lang, "That's how I sing when I'm at home, that's my demo of that song. It was all done in a morning, just after bassist David Piltch and I had composed it. It was actually written as a bluegrass tune, more up-tempo. I deconstructed it to put it on tape and when it was done, I realized, that is exactly how I feel about this song. So I just left it, I never touched it again." Opening track "I Dream Of Spring," is a more lush affair, yet, lang says, it "sort of just happened. After it was finished, I started to sing it around the house and I thought, this is a gift. It came from examining the songs on Hymns of the 49th Parallel and studying those songwriters." "I Dream Of Spring" opens with flamenco-like guitar lines and a drum machine, before gliding into a harmony-layered chorus; in the second verse, Greg Leisz's pedal steel takes over the melody right before the strings swell. As for those strings, the arrangements were also, in a sense, a gift: "They are so crazy, phenomenal. I knew Teddy could do it and I knew that this was the time. When the string session came, we booked six hours, but we were done in three because the arrangements were so clean and so together. It just blew my mind. I started to cry because Teddy elevated the record to such a different level. I am so, so grateful to him."

"Upstream" revisits the bossa nova rhythms that floated through Invincible Summer. Says lang, "I'm a sucker for Brazilian music. It's fun to sing and it's fun to play, so when I'm making music, I always fall back on that." "Sunday," which evokes an even more languid mood, is a sensual spin on Bacharach/David pop-jazz: "I love Sundays, when you just find yourself on the bed, with the sun hitting it," lang admits, and on the track she contemplates all the possibilities of being in such a position.

Once again, lang collaborates with the musicians who have long accompanied her in the studio and on the road: pianist Borowiecki, bassist Piltch, steel player Leisz, guitarist Ben Mink. Jon Hassell makes a guest appearance on trumpet, as does new Nonesuch labelmate Noam Pikelny, banjo player for the Punch Brothers. But, lang reveals, her veteran tour-mates won't be joining her when she takes her new songs on the road: "That's another reason for the album title. It marks a huge, huge change in my life. Teddy, David and Greg will not be with me. I'll have a brand new band. It's a natural turning point -they're older, and are really in demand in the studio for lots of other artists now. I'm going to be like Tony - I can't quit. It's really sad for me to see them go, but at the same time it is one of those changes, a watershed moment, when the direction shifts. I'm excited to work with some new guys and build new relationships. It's a big change for me, but I'm ready to embrace it." lang watershed album

a watershed moment = k.d. lang album 2 interviews

kd lang's Watershed moment part 1

By John Earls - "I could sing the most out-there Radiohead song and make it sound like Perry Como."

Back with her first album of new songs for seven years, the sublime Watershed, kd lang admits it's a struggle to write music suitable for her voice.

"I like alternative music quite a bit," says kd. "But my voice just sounds ridiculous singing it. When you're a good singer, it's hard to please."

Has kd ever resented that her voice is unsuitable for certain genres?

"Definitely," she admits. "But then, when I sing a classic song and it comes out OK, it squelches the unrest.

"There's a certain allotment of fans who'd love me to just sing 12 versions of Crying. It's always been a struggle, and why my voice floats on top of genres, as my artistry is more on the left, yet my voice is so classic."

The voice takes a lot of looking after.

"My whole life is dedicated to looking after it," says kd. "I go to bed early, I don't smoke, don't drink that much, I watch what I eat. I don't worship it... well, I do worship it, but I'm not a martyr to it.

"I don't see myself as a songwriter or an interpreter of others' songs, I'm both. I don't feel like I absolutely have to come up with my own songs."

Hymns Of The 49th Parallel, kd's last album, covered her favourite fellow Canadian singers. Did it help inspire Watershed, which comes out in January?

"It set the bar so high, it was ominous at first," she confesses. "But then I thought that there's no way anyone will expect me to match songs that good.

"Once I got over that, it was fine. I'm not out to be the greatest songwriter in the world, I just do what I can."

Watershed is the first wholly self-produced album of kd's 25-year career.

"The only thing I know for sure is that I'm a singer," she says. "I really like going with wherever being a singer takes me. It took me into producing it this time, sometimes it takes me to singing with others, like Tony Bennett.

"I'm happy that producing allowed me to go from the craft on certain songs to raw, first take versions on others."

Although Watershed is kd's most classic commercial album in some time, she doesn't expect it to sell anything like the multi-platinum Ingenue from 1992.

"I'm 46 and I don't make videos," kd explains. "My live shows are the biggest success, the fact I can still move people and get a diverse audience.

"There's people 25-80 there, straight, gay, jazz, country. That's success."
-------

What kd lang did next part 2 (thanks jools)
By John Earls - Her first album of new songs since 2000, Watershed sees kd lang sing with honesty about failed relationships and heartbreak.

"Anything I say, pretty much anyone has gone through," says kd. "I don't get shy of being personal.

"I no longer wreak havoc on my personal life just to get better songs. I used to live like that, though I wasn't conscious of it."

Coming out as gay shortly before her breakthrough album Ingenue in 1992, kd says her honesty helped her sales.

"It's because it was a dark record," says kd. "Me being open for the reasons for that romantic aspect ultimately helped Ingenue.

"It was a culmination of events. I'd won a Grammy the previous year, then I came out. It was a perfect storm, in essence, the perfect time for me."

Despite signs Ingenue would succeed, the scale of it took kd by surprise.

"It was eight years into my career, and I was switching genres," she recalls.

"And Ingenue is a pretty dark record; romantic, but by no means uplifting. The success was so invigorating and so destructive at the same time. It was an epiphany in every way - spiritually, mentally, physically. It was a mess, basically. A good mess, but a mess."

Watershed was written over six years.

"I gave myself the luxury of time," kd explains. "It's one of the reasons I produced Watershed myself, as an expression of how I feel or hear music.

"Close Your Eyes was recorded in my living room, Shadow was in my dining room. When you capture that creativity of a song in its early process, rather than the translation and craft later, it's a completely different process."

kd's classic voice has remained remarkably unchanged since her early days as a Nashville country singer.

"My range is maybe a little deeper, but I haven't lost any of the high stuff yet," she smiles.

"But I'm 46, and I know it will start changing. How I've evolved is from experience. Before, I'd go full out at every show, and I pull back on the volume now. I use my tools better."

A fan of The New Pornographers and The Shins, kd says her iPod has reawakened her love of music.

"I listen almost entirely on shuffle," she says. "If you hear Radiohead next to Sigur Ros, then Foo Fighters, it makes sense. But when it's juxtaposed with totally different music, like Shirley Horn, I get more invigoriated by the possiblities of songs.

"Not that it's a product endorsement!"

Far from retiring, Canadian icon Anne Murray gets a little help from her female friends in 'Duets'

By JANE STEVENSON

THORNHILL -- Anne Murray's "retirement" sure was short-lived.

The 62-year-old iconic Canadian singer made the mistake of saying her last studio record, 2004's aptly named I'll Be Seeing You, would be her last CD.

Famous last words, as they say.

Now the Spring Hill, N.S., native has got a brand new studio collection, Duets: Friends & Legends, in stores Tuesday, and it's a doozy.

Murray has re-recorded her best-known songs as duets with an all-female group of collaborators including Canadians Shania Twain, Celine Dion, Nelly Furtado, k.d. Lang, Jann Arden, Isabelle Boulay, and her own daughter Dawn Langstroth.

"With the I'll Be Seeing You album, I really believed that that was my last album," Murray told Sun Media, in the second floor office of her spacious Toronto-area home where she's lived since 1979.

"I should have learned a long time ago not to say any of this. I read some of my early clippings and I go, 'Oh, Anne, you idiot.' And here I am doing the same thing."

Gently twisting Murray's arm to re-enter the studio was her label EMI, who staged what she jokingly called "an intervention" at their Toronto offices where they proposed the duets concept.

Within 24 hours, they had come up with a list of songs, collaborators and producers and it was Murray who suggested the all-female idea to help whittle down the artists involved.

From start to finish, the whole project took only eight months.

"I would hate to have missed this experience, I really would have," said Murray, dressed in a sharp-looking denim suit. "And I had to be talked into it, but if somebody presents a good case, I'm all for it -- if it can be done."

Murray eventually invited select media and music industry types for a recent Duets listening session -- plus drinks and lunch -- in the comfort of her home's sunken living room where the family's 9-year-old white West Highland terrier Mikey wandered in and out.

There was a pool table nearby and an actual indoor pool off another room plus an impressively large yard where you might expect the avid golfer, recently named the No.1 female celebrity duffer by Golf For Women magazine, to practise her short game.

Driving up to the two-level brown brick house, protected from the street by a high hedge, the only indication something was going on was the number of cars parked outside.

"I like it," said Murray of having media over. "I'm more at ease. When they set up in hotel rooms and things, it doesn't feel the same. I have this lovely house, I see no reason that people shouldn't enjoy it."

Duets producer Phil Ramone, at Murray's side during the listening session, told Sun Media that about 90% of the artists went to the studio in either Toronto, L.A., New York or Nashville, to record face-to-face with Murray.

And most were initially nervous.

"The artists came to these dates more prepared than I've ever seen and in many ways in awe of Anne," said Ramone. "She's a fussy, fussy performer about her voice production and I think people like Karen Carpenter and other people who have this wonderful warm sound learned from her. But I think Anne Murray's just got the highest rating amongst other singers, particularly women singers who look for that enrichment."

Murray said a nervous Lang even told her: "I was such a big part of her life, musically. I was actually her first crush, that's what she told me when we were recording. Thanks, that's great!"

Others, like Twain, did her part of the duet on You Needed Me, from New Zealand.

"Shania Twain was the easiest person to get to," said Murray. "Trying to put something like this together is a logistical nightmare. I got her e-mail address, (Murray's manager) Bruce Allen, I guess, got it through (Twain's husband) Mutt Lange. I e-mailed her one day and said, 'Would you be interested in being on this CD?' And she wrote back and said, 'Would I?' And that was it. I sent her all the songs and I asked her what she wanted to sing and she chose, of course, probably the best song."

Ramone said his goal was to create an intimacy between the two voices on each duet with Murray always dominant.

Helping each artist in the studio were demos of the vocal arrangements made by Murray and Langstroth.

"She's a major, major artist and stays true to her form," said Ramone. "I felt like we could treat the orchestra in a whole other way, not blasting at you. It's the intimacy between the two voices and how they blend and how she sees it, is the key. Because you can't dominate with her, you shouldn't and you can't. For that person who wants to sing with her, they absolutely are so aware of who they're singing with."

Murray was also particularly thrilled that her daughter and son Will also sang background vocals with her on You Won't See Me, a duet with Shelby Lynne, marking the first time all three family members have been in the studio together.

"It was incredible how fast it went because we sing alike," she said. "And we knew exactly what the other one was doing and it was amazing to me. But they're both very good and it was just a matter of, 'Oh, yeah, that's right, this is how it can be, when everybody is thinking along the same lines.' " Perhaps the most surprising collaboration is popera star Sarah Brightman, who ended up doing Murray's signature tune, Snowbird, with her.

"She came in and she was pretty nervous too because this is not her kind of music," said Murray.

"And she worked so hard on this and we had a real good day but I worked her. But she came there wanting to work, believe me, she wanted to make it right. She wanted to do Snowbird. It is scary but it is a vocal exercise, that song (she breaks into the song's opening), that's a vocal exercise, perfect for somebody who can sing like that."

Murray is now gearing up for a U.S. tour in February and March and a Canadian tour (2008 marks the 40th anniversary of her first record) in April and May.

"I'll do a Canadian tour, probably my last Canadian tour," she said before adding: "But that's okay."

There's also talk of a spring CBC-TV special featuring Murray singing with some of the artists on the new disc given all of the recordings were filmed in high-definition.

"We have the footage so I would think there's going to be something," she said.

Anne Murray Duets: Friends & Legends usa release

Anne Murray Duets: Friends & Legends,' To Be released On January 15, 2008 (usa) i'm still not sure if this is the worldwide date?

NEW YORK (Top40 Charts/ Manhattan Records/EMI America Records) - Music icon Anne Murray has sold more than 50 million albums in a distinguished career that spans four decades. On January 15th, Manhattan/EMI America Records will release Anne Murray Duets: Friends & Legends, an exceptional 17-track collection of her top hits and favorites, newly recorded as duets with some of the world's top female recording artists.
Anne Murray Duets: Friends & Legends showcases a wide variety of Anne's favorite female vocalists.
Among the album's tracks and collaborating artists are "Snowbird" with Sarah Brightman, "You Needed Me" with Shania Twain, "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do" with Anne's daughter Dawn Langstroth, "Danny's Song" with Martina McBride, "Another Pot O' Tea" with Emmylou Harris, "A Little Good News" with Indigo Girls, "Cotton Jenny" with Olivia Newton-John, "Could I Have This Dance" with Amy Grant, "Daydream Believer" with Nelly Furtado, "A Love Song" with k.d. lang, "Time Don't Run Out On Me" with the song's writer, Carole King, and more.
In 1979, Anne and Dusty Springfield each recorded the song "I Just Fall In Love Again." Anne's version became a hit single that garnered her Canada's Juno Award for "Single of the Year" in 1980. Anne and Dusty remained friends until Dusty's passing in 1999, and for Anne, releasing an album with this type of sisterly theme wouldn't seem complete without Dusty's inclusion. With the blessing of the Springfield family and estate, a new version pairing Dusty's original with Anne's newly recorded vocals is featured on the album.
Anne Murray Duets: Friends & Legends was produced by one of the most respected music producers in the world, Phil Ramone (Tony Bennett, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Barbra Streisand, Billy Joel), who counts 14 Grammy Awards and 32 Grammy nominations among his many honors. Together, Anne and Phil decided they would treat the songs on their own terms and not adhere rigidly to the arrangements of Anne's classic versions. While Anne had designs on how she imagined the arrangements, she gave Phil free rein to rework the songs.
"We approached the sessions as if we were just handed these songs and told to make this record," explains Ramone. "While arrangements were changed, there are also licks on some songs that I didn't mess with. We stayed true to the song."
Working with Anne for the first time, Ramone adds, was an easy task. "What I love about Anne is there are no words minced about whatever she feels," he says. "This is not a person you have to think, 'Will she tell me the truth?' When we met for a few hours in Michigan before we started, we agreed we wanted to bring some daring ideas and some freshness to this album."
"I said to Phil," joked Anne, "The only reason I asked you was that I'm the only singer left that you haven't worked with!"
"I've done duets throughout my career," Anne says. "I did duets when I started out on (CBC Television's) 'Singalong Jubilee.' I did a duets album in 1971 with Glen Campbell. Growing up I did lot of group singing at school and sang with my brothers. I've always loved singing harmony."
Since releasing her debut album in 1967, Anne Murray has been honored with a spectacular number of awards. She is the proud recipient of four Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, three Country Music Association Awards, three Canadian Country Music Association Awards and twenty-four Juno Awards. Anne has also been honored with the Legacy Award from the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (2006), the East Coast Music Association Directors' Special Achievement Award (2001), induction into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame (2002), and induction into the Juno Hall of Fame (1993).
Anne Murray will tour to several U.S. cities in February and March 2008 (confirmed tour dates listed below). For updates and additional information, visit Anne Murray's official Website: http://www.annemurray.com

Annie Lennox with k.d. lang "SING"

Annie Lennox with k.d. lang "SING"

SING" to be released for World AIDS Day...
Posted by MiCkEyMiAmI at 10/20/2007 02:01:00 AM

Annie Lennox has teamed up with 23 of the world’s most acclaimed female superstar voices for the charity record Sing, to raise money and awareness for the HIV/AIDS organisation, Treatment Action Campaign (TAC).

The original track, already available to download through all online retailers, will be accompanied by special remixes available from Saturday 1st December - WORLD AIDS DAY.

This will be the first ever digital release on a Saturday in the UK. Annie Lennox 'Sing (Remixes)' will feature guest vocals from Madonna, Celine Dion, Pink, Shakira, KT Tunstall, Dido, Faith Hill, Fergie, Sugababes, Beth orton, Bonnie Raitt, Marths Wainwright, Joss Stone, melissa Etheridge, Angelique Kidjo, Beverly Knight, K.D. Lang, Shingau Shoniwa, Galdys Knight, Isobel Campbell, Sarah McLachlan together with The Generics.

'Sing' will feature hot remixes from Moto Blanco, Dean Coleman, Harry 'Choo Choo' Rimerez and Annie Lennox & Nitin Sawhney.

"We had a few technical hitches with the Myspace SING site , but they seem to have been sorted out now.

I just wanted to write something about the project.

Over the last twenty five years or so, I've been involved with a variety of organisations in all kinds of different ways ..from Shelter, to Amnesty International, to Free Tibet Campaign to Greenpeace, Oxfam, Medecins Sans Frontieres, The Prince's Trust..etc..etc.. It's a long and varied list. My long term goal was, that as well as these causes, I could become involved with an issue where I could really focus, and make a more concerted difference. My first visit to South Africa to take part in the launch of the first 46664 concert ( incidentally all instituted by Dave Stewart ) was a profound experience for me in all kinds of ways.

I realised that the Hiv Aids pandemic was affecting women and children on a scale that is absolutely staggering, and I felt that as a woman, mother, and musical communicator, I have an obligation to try to affect some positive change. I want to create musical projects that can bring people together, in a way that can help give a "voice" and empowerment to those that seem to have none.

Music is a powerful vehicle for messages, and connection. This is the very first SING project. I hope there will be many more to follow.

anne murray duets w/kd lang cover, tracklist and pre-sales

this is the album cover, tracklist and some purchase links for the new anne murray duets friends & legends album with k.d. lang.

Anne Murray Duets: Friends & Legends is a collection of Anne’s most classic songs re-recorded as duets with some of the finest women of song. The album offers a wide variety of some of Anne's favourite female voices including: Shania Twain, Martina McBride, Nelly Furtado, Isabelle Boulay, k.d. lang, Celtic Woman, Carole King, Olivia Newton-John, Emmylou Harris, Jann Arden, Shelby Lynn, Sarah Brightman, Celine Dion, Amy Grant, Indigo Girls, Dusty Springfield as well as Anne's daughter, Dawn Langstroth. Dawn and Anne’s son, Will Langstroth provided back-up vocals on some tracks.Anne Murray Duets: Friends & Legends was produced by one of the most respected and prolific music producers in the world, Phil Ramone (Tony Bennett, Elton John, Barbara Streisand, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel), who has 32 Grammy nominations and 12 Grammy Awards to his name.

Songs include "You Needed Me," "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do," and "Danny's Song." Anne teamed up with Olivia Newton-John for Cotton Jenny. Also included is a duet of "I Just Fall In Love Again" with the late Dusty Springfield, using Dusty’s original 1979 recording. In 1979, both Anne and Dusty Springfield recorded the song " I Just Fall In Love Again," with Anne 's rendition reaching no. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning Anne a Juno for “Single of the Year” in 1980. With the blessing of the Springfield family and estate, a version of this song combining Dusty's original recording will also be featured on this package. Releasing an album with this type of sisterly theme wouldn't seem complete for Anne without Dusty's inclusion. They were friends until her passing in 1999.

1. Danny's Song (with Martina McBride) 2. I Just Fall In Love Again (with Dusty Springfield) 3. Another Pot O Tea (with Emmylou Harris) 4. Daydream Believer (with Nelly Furtado) 5. Somebody's Always Saying Goodbye (with Jann Arden) 6. Song For The Mira (with Celtic Woman) 7. Time Don't Run Out On Me (with Carole King) 8. Cotton Jenny (with Olivia Newton-John) 9. “Ms. Lang fuses Patsy Cline's earthy torchiness with Peggy Lee's smoky intensity and Liza Minnelli's belting fervor. — The New York Times

k.d. lang could have the most extravagantly praised voice performing today. Her duets with Tony Bennett are legendary, and she is a multi Grammy Award winner for her albums Shadowland, Ingenue, and A Wonderful World (with Bennett.) Originally a country star in her native Canada, lang’s impeccable musical taste and soaring vocals led her into the pop genre with ease. With the release of her newest album, Watershed, lang is at the very top of her game.

k.d. lang at hammer museum's "gala in the garden" event fundraiser

k.d. lang at Hammer Museum Gala Fundraiser

Miuccia Prada's Pedestal
Designer honored at Hammer Museum's "Gala in the Garden"
Monday, October 15, 2007

(LOS ANGELES) Miuccia Prada needs a good excuse to come to Los Angeles--and she got one by being honored at the Hammer Museum's annual "Gala in the Garden" Sunday night. The only member of the Prada team to accompany her was Verde Visconti, who flew in with her for the event. Miuccia was on the bill with Mike Kelley, who was given a tribute by John Waters. "John is my only celebrity friend--my only Hollywood friend--and he lives in Baltimore! So whenever I get one of these things, I have to drag him out,"Kelley laughed in response to Waters. Prada's tribute, meanwhile, came from perhaps the art world's best-known morphing fashionista, Cindy Sherman.

It was a chilly night in L.A., and much of the event was outdoors--cocktails on the museum's terrace, while dinner and the awards gala were set in an atrium garden--but the predicted rain never fell, thank goodness, so Mrs. Prada, who declined to give interviews at the event, didn't have to get her blue and red checked voluminous skirt and black top (looking like items from the spring collection) wet. While Randolph Duke was showing at L.A. Fashion Week in Culver City, this was the fête with the heavy hitters: Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Vanessa Getty, Diane Keaton, k.d. lang, Katherine Ross and Michael Govan, Benedict Taschen, Ann Philbin, Alejandro González Iñárritu much of the cast of Showtime's The L Word, and Gregory Parkinson were all at the event, better dressed than any fashion week crowd could ever aspire to be. And apparently they dress this well always--Lauren Hutton, in a man's blazer and black leather leggings, was overheard asking Dana Delaney, "Is there a dress code for this event?"

enduring vision elton john 6th aids benefit review w/kd lang

Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne were among the black-tie guests making their way past cops, Secret Service agents and bomb-sniffing dogs surrounding the Waldorf-Astoria Tuesday night.

"Are you here to see the President?" one member of the security detail asked Ozzy and Sharon.

"No," said Sharon. "We're here to see the Queen!"

By that, she meant Sir Elton John. The Rocket Man was gathering his court for the Elton John AIDS Foundation's gala the very night President Bush was meeting with world leaders. Since he was sharing the hotel with Dubya, we asked Elton if he thought the Bush administration had made good on his grand plan to fight AIDS.

"They've made a grave error in giving millions to abstinence programs," he told us. "They don't work. They were told in the beginning that it wouldn't work. It's a tragic waste of money. Please don't listen to those idiots. God almighty."

And did he have a message for other leaders gathered at the UN, particularly South African President Thabo Mbeki, whom Elton said should be "ashamed" of his AIDS policy. (Mbeki has supported his health minister, who says garlic, beetroots, lemon and olive oil are better than antiretroviral medicines in treating AIDS.)

"There are some weird people in the world — what can I say?" said Elton. "I would just tell them, 'Don't let the AIDS crisis get lost.'" He mentioned that his foundation's latest target is the Caribbean, where "men who have sex with men [are] a highly stigmatized group, especially among reggae singers."

The evening was emceed by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, who said he was looking forward to Elton performing with k.d. lang.
"I offered to do some interpretive dance," said Cooper. "But after a brief audition, I was told my services wouldn't be required."

Turning serious, Cooper went on: "I talk to young gay friends in New York, and some of them seem to think the AIDS problem is a thing of the past. … The reality is that it's getting worse, not better."

Also at the benefit, which raised over $2.25 million, were Elton's partner, David Furnish, Uma Thurman (with former Elle Macpherson beau Arky Busson), Petra Nemcova, Tommy Hilfiger, Milos Forman, Susan Lucci, Andrew Cuomo and Stephen Schwartzman. Honored with Enduring Vision awards were the Osbournes, candle king Harry Slatkin and Chopard co-president Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele.

As usual, Elton was his outspoken self. He defended that Nan Goldin photo that he'd loaned to a British gallery and which police seized on Tuesday to investigate as a possible breach of child pornography laws.

"I never cease to be amazed by people," said the musician, who noted on his Web site that the photo of two naked girls "has been widely published and exhibited throughout the world."

He also had some thoughts on the meal's first course — mozzarella balls in a Parmesan tostada.

"It's being sent to the Food and Drug Administration to find out what it was," he told guests. "It qualifies as the worst food I've ever seen at an event like this. My sincere apologies

Grammy award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter kd lang continues to pay tribute to her favourite Canadian songwriters, including Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Jane Siberry, Ron Sexsmith and Neil Young.

Moving east across the prairie, kd enters Saskatchewan – Joni Mitchell territory. She's a Joni fan, describing her as an "incredible talent" who "sprung on the music stage fully formed". Joni's lyrics are "seemingly ordinary stories that you can picture as though you know the person she's singing about personally," says kd.
