Murray set to release duets CD

Anne Murray will release a collection of duets with female singers in November.

Canadian singer Anne Murray will be back in the spotlight this fall with the release of a collection of duets.

Anne Murray Duets: Friends and Legends is due out in November with a U.S. release scheduled for January. It features updated versions of some of her classic songs with artists like Shania Twain, Nelly Furtado, Martina McBride, Carole King and Emmylou Harris.

Produced by the legendary Grammy winner Phil Ramone, the CD also has duets with Jann Arden, Shelby Lynn, Isabelle Boulay, k.d. lang, and Celtic Woman. Murray’s adult children Dawn and Will provided back-up vocals.

Songs include "You Needed Me," "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do," and "Danny’s Song." Murray, 62, teamed up with Olivia Newton-John for "Cotton Jenny."

Also included is a duet of "I Just Fall In Love Again" with the late Dusty Springfield, using the latter’s original 1979 recording. Murray’s version of the song earned her a Juno Award in 1980.

The CD, which was recorded between April and June in Los Angeles, Nashville and Toronto, will be packaged with extensive liner notes and a biography written by former Billboard contributor Larry Leblanc.

A native of Springhill, N.S., who now lives north of Toronto, Murray has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide in the past four decades. Last year, she was honoured with a Legacy Award by the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Murray has announced plans for a series of concerts in the U.S. in February and March.

THE LEBLANC NEWSLETTER - DEBUT ISSUE (F. THE LATE DOUG RILEY)
As you may know, I am no longer at Billboard after close to 17 years. However, as I have been a music industry journalist for 40 years, I will continue writing and being a commentator on TV. I certainly have enough work at hand. This summer has been quite busy. I wrote reports for The Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Records, as well as Canadian Heritage.
I am now writing liner notes and an accompanying biography for Anne Murray Duets: Friends and Legends, recorded with legendary producer Phil Ramone. Anne has re-recorded some of her best-known hits with Shania Twain, Nelly Furtado, Emmylou Harris, Carole King, Jann Arden, kd lang, Isabelle Boulay, and Shelby Lynn.
While I do have several offers to write for publications, many music industry people have urged me to make continued use of my extensive e-mail list—nearing 6,000 names worldwide-- to write a regular blog. I don’t want to. Most blogs seem to be rants with little information. However, I feel an informative newsletter on the music industry in Canada—including overviews of label, retail and publishing activities as well as noting key releases—might be more appropriate.
Without a trade paper in Canada, now that The Record and RPM Weekly have gone, I think there’s room for a weekly (or so) newsletter — The LeBlanc Newsletter. It won’t be my full-time gig—Billboard certainly wasn’t—but it will hopefully shed a light on our industry. Feel free to pass it on or post it on your website when appropriate. For its debut, here’s an article on the late Doug Riley—Dr. Music—who passed away this week. I hope you enjoy it.

Special Camp For Kids Fighting For Their LivesSupported By Music Icon k.d. lang
By Cheryl Jennings

LIVERMORE, Calif., Aug. 21, 2007 (KGO) - An East Bay non-profit group that provides free summer camp for more than two thousand children with life threatening illnesses is getting ready for its annual fundraiser. Thanks to your help, the Taylor Family Foundation is opening its doors to an even wider group of children.

Jamie Price is leading the newest group of young people to visit Camp Arroyo in Livermore. These students are learning about a program called "Tools for Peace."

"So what we've done here throughout the week is worked on cultivating our positive attitudes in order to uncover our wisdom and compassion," said Price.

This chapter of the "Tools for Peace" program was founded by a very high-profile music artist, k.d. lang, and her partner Jamie.

"It's a camp that teaches kids how to navigate through society in a non-aggressive, non-confrontational way, using the blueprint of the Tibetan Mandala," said lang.

"A lot of the kids come from environments that are infested with gang activity. Some of them come from shelters where they live with their mothers who have had trouble with violence in their husbands," said Price.

k.d. lang and Jamie Price were inspired to form Peace Camp by their Buddhist teacher, Lama Gyatso. He and his colleagues came from Los Angeles to meet the kids at Camp Arroyo in Livermore.

"It's not religious in any way, but it does come out wisdom of many religions, many cultures," said Price.

"Everyone has bad days, everyone has difficulties, that you don't know the whole story all the time, that you need to put yourself in other people's shoes," said lang.

k.d. lang put herself in someone else's shoes in the kitchen. It's where she spends some of her time during camp.

"I traveled the world and I see a lot of extraordinary wealth and entitlement and poverty. I think that's one of the things that motivates me to work so hard at what I do," said lang. "The music enables me to have the money that I can spend so much time doing this."

Camp Arroyo was founded by Elaine and Barry Taylor with the Taylor Family Foundation. Peace Camp is very different in their mission to help children.

"We kinda opened it up two years ago to expand and do disabilities and youth at risk," said Elaine Taylor.

"They're very aware that there are some things they never knew about human relationships," said Barry Taylor. "And they're starting to understand their part in it."

Nearly 2000 kids come to camp every summer and attend for free. The children face life-threatening illnesses, so it takes the entire community to raise the million dollar budget it takes to do this.

"We've some amazing auction packages this year, starting with an Elton John Oscar Party," said June Johnstone of the Taylor Family Foundation.

It's a one day, gigantic fundraiser attended by 1000 people held here in Livermore every August.

"Our annual day in the park, which we hope to raise a million dollars, takes care of that, as well as sending other kids to different ancillary social and psychological programs," said Johnstone.

One of the lessons the kids taught us at Peace Camp, is how to avoid saying something we might regret, and the rule is to stop, breathe and think. It's a lesson we could all learn.

13-year-old Ronella Rosenberg says the "Tools for Peace" program helps her with her brother.

"I need to slow down, stop and think about what I'm going to say, and the consequences it might bring," said Rosenberg. "So instead of yelling and everything, I know how to stop, think and breathe, it's really helpful."

The fundraiser is Sunday, August 26 at noon at Camp Arroyo in Livermore.

k.d. lang is back in the studio

langisms ~ a k.d. lang/arts group

k.d. lang is back in the studio
album due out february 2008

03:36 PM PDT on Thursday, July 19, 2007

By PAUL SAITOWITZ
Special to The Press-Enterprise

Singer k.d. lang's alluring multilayered voice is so
malleable that the singer who first penetrated the
music world as a windblown Canadian country punk is
now safely without a true genre tag.

She's been a part of countless duets -- Roy Orbison,
Madeleine Peyroux and Nellie McKay, to name a few.
She's had a huge adult contemporary hit with 1992's
"Constant Craving." She's taken home Grammy Awards for
Best Female Country Vocal Performance and for Best
Female Pop Vocal Performance. She's even had roles of
varying sizes in a number of films and TV shows.

But she hasn't issued a set of original material in
more than half a decade.

Singer k.d. lang plans for a new record to be
available by February.

Her latest effort, 2006's "Reintarnation," was a
compilation of her early country punk songs. Before
that, 2004's "Hymns of the 49th Parallel" was a set of
covers dedicated to musicians from her native Canada
-- Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, etc. And
2002's "A Wonderful World" was a record of standards
she did with Tony Bennett.

Recently she's been writing songs and spending time in
the studio. The plan is for a new original record to
be available by February.

"I have been doing so many classic songs and when
you're performing that stuff the bar is pretty high,
so now that I'm working on my own songs again I feel
like I'm taking it a little easier," lang said during
a telephone interview. "My own songs actually conjure
up a little bit more invulnerability."

To prepare for the new release and tour, lang is doing
a short stint across the country with old co-hort Lyle
Lovett. He and lang first hit the road together early in their careers in 1986 and have maintained a strong
connection.

Both have sustained careers that float somewhere
between the country, rock and pop worlds.

"We haven't planned on doing any particular songs
together on this tour, but I'm pretty sure you can
expect to see that," she said.

"It's always been really natural when he and I get in
the room together ... it's like some kind of osmosis."

Her choice of touring partner marks a return to her
roots. She is still somewhat supporting
"Reintarnation," though she plans on playing songs
from throughout her career.

Will lang reclaim her alternative country mojo on the
forthcoming release? "The songs I've been working are
really kind of all over the place, which is really
freeing as a writer," she said. "I don't feel like I
have to be pigeonholed into writing songs that fit
into one particular style so I just write what comes
to mind."

Still, lang expects to be mixing in other people's
material for the rest of her career.

"I grew up listening to great singers like Ray
Charles, Linda Ronstadt and Ray Orbison and they found a way to blend the two ... hopefully I'll be able to
stay on that path too," she said.

Sing - Who are the 23?

There seems to be a lot of interest about SING, the HIV Aids anthem I've
written and recorded with the "Choir of 23" internationally renowned women
artists, and The Generics...Treatment Action Campaign's vocal group, who I
recently met for the first time in Cape Town. I thought it might be a good
time to announce the quintessential line up of ladies....

Anastacia
Angelique Kidjo
Beth Gibbons
Beth Orton
Beverley Knight
Bonnie Raitt
Celine Dion
Dido
Faith Hill
Fergie
Gladys Knight
Isobel Campbell
Joss Stone
KD Lang
KT Tunstall
Madonna
Martha Wainwright
Melissa Etheridge
Pink
Sarah McLachlan
Shakira
Shingai Shoniwa

I also met with Nitan Sawney the other evening, and it's very likely that
he'll work his magic into an altenative "special" version of the song. Nitan
is a committed humanitarion, and is very much behind the concept of SING,
what it stands for, and aims to achieve.
Watch this space...MY space for further news...
I'm building up towards October.

exploring the arts fundraiser nyc tony/bennett k.d. lang

exploring the arts and benefit concert in nyc sept 8 and 9

On Sept. 8 & 9, 2007 at Radio City Music Hall Tony will sing and guest stars include James Taylor and k. d. lang.
This event benefits Tony and Susan's co-founded organization, Exploring the Arts. Tony and Susan's jewel is the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, a public high school in its sixth successful year. Kevin Spacey is to be keynote speaker at the graduation ceremonies Tuesday. The U.N. made Tony their 2007 Humanitarian honoree. ...
Tony and Susan co-founded the charitable organization Exploring the Arts, which will launch its first fundraising event with a benefit concert at Radio City Music Hall September 9. Guest artists performing with Tony will include JAMES TAYLOR and K.D. LANG. Exploring the Arts funds arts education, and the jewel in the crown is the FRANK SINATRA School of the Arts, a public high school in New York City that Tony and Susan worked tirelessly to bring about.
http://exploringthearts.org/young-artists.html
The Frank Sinatra School of the Arts is an art high school located in Long Island City Queens, New York. It was established by Exploring the Arts, a charitable organization co-founded by Tony Bennett. It offers studio courses in instrumental music, vocal music, fine art, dance, and drama. In order to be admitted to this school, a student must audition for one of the art programs. Grades are also a deciding factor.
Students have six periods of academic work and three periods in their studio.
All students within the school are able to tryout for the Musical Theater program (usually beginning in 11th grade) or jazz band. In 2008, when the school will move to their permanent building, the students will be allowed to take film.
Due to the high profile of the school and the leadership of Tony Bennett, the school's graduation ceremonies have had many famous keynote speakers. Such include: Class of 2007, Kevin Spacey, Class of 2006, Former N.Y. Governer Mario Cuomo, Class of 2005, Wynton Marsalis, and Class of 2004, Jerry Seinfeld

History
The Frank Sinatra School of the Arts was founded in 2001 by the singer Tony Bennett, to honor his good friend Frank Sinatra. The school was originally in the fourth floor of the IDCNY building in Long Island City, where the small student population walked down a single bright blue hallway to get from class to class. In 2005, FSSA moved across the street to the sixth and seventh floors of the Queens Atrium Building. (The DeVry, Long Island City campus and two other smaller high schools are located in the eight floor building.)
In September 2008, the school will move to a permanent building which is being built right now in Astoria, Queens. It will be near the American Museum of the Moving Image and Kaufman Astoria Studios. In that building, students will be allowed to take film. The musical theater group will be opened as a separate studio.
