enduring vision elton john 6th aids benefit review w/kd lang

Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne were among the black-tie guests making their way past cops, Secret Service agents and bomb-sniffing dogs surrounding the Waldorf-Astoria Tuesday night.

"Are you here to see the President?" one member of the security detail asked Ozzy and Sharon.

"No," said Sharon. "We're here to see the Queen!"

By that, she meant Sir Elton John. The Rocket Man was gathering his court for the Elton John AIDS Foundation's gala the very night President Bush was meeting with world leaders. Since he was sharing the hotel with Dubya, we asked Elton if he thought the Bush administration had made good on his grand plan to fight AIDS.

"They've made a grave error in giving millions to abstinence programs," he told us. "They don't work. They were told in the beginning that it wouldn't work. It's a tragic waste of money. Please don't listen to those idiots. God almighty."

And did he have a message for other leaders gathered at the UN, particularly South African President Thabo Mbeki, whom Elton said should be "ashamed" of his AIDS policy. (Mbeki has supported his health minister, who says garlic, beetroots, lemon and olive oil are better than antiretroviral medicines in treating AIDS.)

"There are some weird people in the world — what can I say?" said Elton. "I would just tell them, 'Don't let the AIDS crisis get lost.'" He mentioned that his foundation's latest target is the Caribbean, where "men who have sex with men [are] a highly stigmatized group, especially among reggae singers."

The evening was emceed by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, who said he was looking forward to Elton performing with k.d. lang.
"I offered to do some interpretive dance," said Cooper. "But after a brief audition, I was told my services wouldn't be required."

Turning serious, Cooper went on: "I talk to young gay friends in New York, and some of them seem to think the AIDS problem is a thing of the past. … The reality is that it's getting worse, not better."

Also at the benefit, which raised over $2.25 million, were Elton's partner, David Furnish, Uma Thurman (with former Elle Macpherson beau Arky Busson), Petra Nemcova, Tommy Hilfiger, Milos Forman, Susan Lucci, Andrew Cuomo and Stephen Schwartzman. Honored with Enduring Vision awards were the Osbournes, candle king Harry Slatkin and Chopard co-president Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele.

As usual, Elton was his outspoken self. He defended that Nan Goldin photo that he'd loaned to a British gallery and which police seized on Tuesday to investigate as a possible breach of child pornography laws.

"I never cease to be amazed by people," said the musician, who noted on his Web site that the photo of two naked girls "has been widely published and exhibited throughout the world."

He also had some thoughts on the meal's first course — mozzarella balls in a Parmesan tostada.

"It's being sent to the Food and Drug Administration to find out what it was," he told guests. "It qualifies as the worst food I've ever seen at an event like this. My sincere apologies

OUR MISSION
Harpseals.org seeks to bring about a permanent end to the massacres of harp seals in Canada . We are utilizing mass media and grassroots activism to raise awareness about the continued killing of the seals in Canada and are promoting a boycott of Canadian seafood to pressure the sealers (who are fishermen) to call for an end to the killing. Harpseals.org is working to spread the message about the Canadian seafood boycott through mass media advertising, such as billboards, radio and television commercials, and print ads and through grassroots outreach, including leafletting, tabling, speaking engagements, and demonstrations. We also seek to educate the public and raise funds through special events that generate media attention. KD Lang to Join Elton at an Enduring Vision 6th annual benefit...

KD Lang to Join Elton at an Enduring Vision
The incredible k.d. lang will join Sir Elton John as the special musical guest for the Elton John AIDS Foundation's 6th annual An Enduring Vision benefit to be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria in New York City on Tuesday, September 25, 2007.

The evening will be hosted by Anderson Cooper, and as a part of the program, EJAF will present Enduring Vision awards to corporate philanthropists Harry Slatkin of Slatkin & Co./Bath & Body Works and Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele of Chopard and to long-time EJAF supporters Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne.

As Sir Elton noted in his remarks for last year's An Enduring Vision, 40,000 more Americans continue to become infected with HIV every year. Current public and private sector responses are inadequate to stop new HIV infections. With new HIV infections outstripping our capacity to provide HIV treatment by six-to-one, clearly we must invest in HIV prevention much, much more aggressively. Over the past several years, An Enduring Vision has become a major source of funding for EJAF and has enabled the Foundation to increase its direct grant-making and its community partnership collaboration with the National AIDS Fund by 136%.

Ann Wilson - Hope & Glory

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 11 2007

Ann Wilson is one of the best known voices in rock, having fronted the legendary band Heart since the mid-'70s. With hits like "Crazy on You" and "Barracuda," Heart was one of the most popular bands of the album rock era. In the '80s Heart found even greater success with monster MTV and radio hits such as "Alone" and "Never." Hope & Glory is Ann Wilson's first-ever solo album and includes guest appearances from luminaries Elton John, Deana Carter, Shawn Colvin, Alison Krauss, k.d. lang, Rufus Wainwright, Gretchen Wilson, Nancy Wilson, and Wynonna on a variety of classic covers selected for their insight into important current social issues, including Elton John's "Where to Now St. Peter?," Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song," and Neil Young's "War of Man."

hope and glory ann wilson with k.d. lang and more review and info

Ann Wilson - Hope & Glory

it's available to listen and buy now and out in the stores on september 11. (may they rest in peace)

Goodbye Blue Sky - For an album opener it sets the mood for what to expect. The music and vocals are harmonious and gentle in the beginning and then pick up. There is a "Goodbye Ruby Tuesday" feel to the vocal arrangements when Ann is singing Goodbye Blue Sky just over midway through the song. The song itself then fades nicely with Ann and drums.

Jackson - Wonderful Country beginning. Ann's vocals will send chills through you. KD Lang's vocals are not as prominent as those by Elton. Jackson is not a duet in that sense, more like a backing vocalist adding additionality to Ann's and KD is sure complimentary against Ann's voice.

We gotta get outta this place - Wynonna's voice is as distinctive as Ann's, and it is Wynonna that kicks starts this song. As Ann joins in the drums and the rhythm also break lose and then it is kick back mode for two exceptional vocalists. You can imagine the fun these two had singing this song as Ann sings "You know it baby!"

Darkness Darkness - This is the closet to the sound of Heart that I think Ann gets on this album. It is one of those songs that grows in stature. Soft and acoustic start, then rhythm guitars, all the while Ann singing in her immaculate style, it then breaks into a fully fledged sombre rock song. Ann treats us to her trademark vocals as the song comes to a close.

Bad Moon Rising - "Mustard and Ketchup?? Chicken and a waffle and mustard on top???" This is Country at its best. And I sit corrected about which is was the funnest song to have recorded. This is a feel good factor song even though the lyrics are in stark contradiction. It is the most up tempo song on the album and one that needs the windows down when you are driving around. I have cranked this up in Sheffield - a non Country music city! Gretchen is every bit the barnburner and she and Ann do rip up the whole darn place.

Get Together - Slow and gentle beginning. Ann's dreamy vocals fill the senses. Deana and Wynonna are in the backing positions. They don’t take the lead from Ann, doubt that they would dare. This is a dreamy acoustic song.

Isolation - Incredible. Ann's vocals are something to hang onto. She drip out the word Isolation against a lazy drum, piano and gradual rhythm guitar beginning. And then the change into what to me is semi blues mode and then back again and so forth.

Hard rain's a gonna fall - This is a singers song. The music begins in the background and pretty much stays there until midway through. The song itself is reminiscent of how 3 story tellers would sing a story. Ann's voice is full of expression and carries the majority of the story. However Rufus Wainwright is the storyteller who sings with the vocal arrangements that carry a sense of taunting. Shaun Colvin sings with the softness that is characteristic of her. She is the balance between Ann and Rufus and she works it beautifully.

Little Problems, Little Lies - Goes at a soft and gentle pace which is in contradiction to the harsh but touching lyrics. This could well have been an album opener, however it works best as the closer to a sombre but reflective album.

Hope and Glory is a listeners album. It is not one to be put on in the background, it has a requirement for you to pay attention to it. Not exclusively because Ann is debuting for us! But because it is one wonderfully crafted piece of work that warrants respect.

The beauty is that although these, except one, are not her songs, make no doubt they are her's through and through just as much as they have been ours when we have needed the poignant lyrics. This is the most vocal in that subtle and in the literal sense that I have heard Ann come across in.

Thanks Ghalib for the review!

- “Hope & Glory,” from Ann Wilson, is the lead singer of Heart’s first solo accomplishment. Wilson teams up with artists like K.D. Lang and even country crooner Wynonna Judd for tracks that will call to listeners and make them feel all of the emotions that Wilson is presenting.

“Goodbye Blue Sky” has Ann Wilson sharing a song with sister and fellow Heart bandmate, Nancy. This track has deep guitar and drum work that flows exceptionally well as the pair harmonizes in the intro. The message of the song seems to be that the two are evading some nameless force. “Did did did did did you ever wonder why we had to run for shelter…Beneath the clear blue sky.”

On “Where To Now St. Peter” Wilson and acclaimed piano man Elton John work together to form a melody that talks about following the providence no matter what one’s religious affiliation happens to be. Profound percussion starts off the track, and then Wilson begins singing about her innermost thoughts. “Took myself…And I floated…Dazzling, dancing ….Crazy was the feeling, restless were my eyes.” Then John takes over the rhythm of the song and beams his question to the apostle of where his next destination might be. “Where to now, St. Peter, it’s true I’m in your hands.” The spiritual bend inbred in this song might speak to listeners who feel they have lost their way and wish to find it in the musicality of this track.

“Jackson” tones things down a bit as Wilson and balladeer K.D. Lang commiserate using their unique vocal talents. Fixed guitar strumming can be heard in the intro as one of the women sings to the other about a trip they are going to make and their feelings in regard to it. “All the way to Jackson, I don’t think I’ll miss you much. All the way to Jackson, I don’t think I’ll miss you much. Once I get to Lafayette, I won’t mind one little bit. Once I get to Lafayette, I won’t mind one little bit. Once I get to Baton Rouge, I won’t cry a tearful hue. Once I get to Baton Rouge, I won’t cry a tearful hue.”

Ann Wilson’s “Hope & Glory” is an album that pairs her with singers that span multiple musical genres. Wilson’s timbre has a no-nonsense tone on some tracks and a sweetness on others that will be impossible for listeners to shy away from. All in all, Wilson’s debut solo album is sure to mark her ascension into musical paradise.

anne murry duets: friends & legends release dates and more info

Anne’s new album, Anne Murray Duets: Friends & Legends, is due out in November in Canada with a U.S. release scheduled for January.

Anne Murray Duets: Friends & Legends is a collection of Anne’s most classic songs re-recorded as duets with some of the finest women of song. The album offers a wide variety of Anne's favourite female voices including: Shania Twain, Martina McBride, Nelly Furtado, Isabelle Boulay, k.d. Lang, Celtic Woman, Carole King, Olivia Newton-John, Emmylou Harris, Jann Arden, Shelby Lynn as well as Anne's daughter, Dawn Langstroth. Dawn and Anne’s son, Will Langstroth provided back-up vocals on some tracks. More artists to be unveiled soon.

Anne Murray Duets: Friends & Legends is being produced by one of the most respected and prolific music producers in the world, Phil Ramone (Tony Bennett, Elton John, Barbara Streisand, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel), who has 32 Grammy nominations and 12 Grammy Awards to his name.

Songs include "You Needed Me," "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do," and "Danny's Song." Anne teamed up with Olivia Newton-John for Cotton Jenny. Also included is a duet of "I Just Fall In Love Again" with the late Dusty Springfield, using Dusty’s original 1979 recording. In 1979, both Anne and Dusty Springfield recorded the song " I Just Fall In Love Again," with Anne 's rendition reaching no. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning Anne a Juno for “Single of the Year” in 1980. With the blessing of the Springfield family and estate, a version of this song combining Dusty's original recording will also be featured on this package. Releasing an album with this type of sisterly theme wouldn't seem complete for Anne without Dusty's inclusion. They were friends until her passing in 1999.

The CD was recorded in Los Angeles, Nashville and Toronto.

Anne Murray Duets: Friends & Legends will be sold on-line at annemurray.com on the Music & Gift Shop on the release date - to be announced.
